Advances in measuring ocean salinity with an optical sensor ArchiMer
Le Menn, Marc; De La Tocnaye, J. L. De Bougrenet; Grosso, P.; Delauney, Laurent; Podeur, Christian; Brault, P.; Guillerme, O..
Absolute salinity measurement of seawater has become a key issue in thermodynamic models of the oceans. One of the most direct ways is to measure the seawater refractive index which is related to density and can therefore be related to the absolute salinity. Recent advances in high resolution position sensitive devices enable us to take advantage of small beam deviation measurements using refractometers. This paper assesses the advantages of such technology with respect to the current state-of-the-art technology. In particular, we present the resolution dependence on refractive index variations and derive the limits of such a solution for designing seawater sensors well suited for coastal and deep-sea applications. Particular attention has been paid to...

Contribution au développement et à l'amélioration des techniques d'échantillonnage passif (DGT et POCIS) : développment et amélioration techniques EP : II-B-01 (16). Rapport final ArchiMer

This project is a contribution to the improvement and development of passive sampling techniques. The objectives are: - to develop ways to limit the fouling formation on the samplers requiring prolonged immersion time (POCIS) and ensure a "constant" and reproducible sampling rate - test and validate the DGT developed specifically for Hg wich is a "WFD priority" metal. Key words (thematic and geographical area) :Passive samplers, POCIS, DGT, fouling, sampling rate, Hg, baie du Lazaret , étang de Thau

Développement et essais d’un salinomètre optique pour l’océanographie ArchiMer
Le Menn, Monique; Malardé, Damien; David, Arnaud; Brault, Patrice; Grosso, Philippe; De Bougrenet De La Tocnaye, Jean-louis; Le Reste, Serge; Podeur, Christian.
Salinity is the essential parameter for ocean dynamics studies. Its definition and using in the equations used to calculate the thermodynamic properties of seawater, were revised in 2010, opening the possibility of new sensors developments. In this context, NOSS (NKE Optical Salinity Sensor) has emerged as one of the first underwater instrument for in situ refractive index measurement in the past years open up the scope of possibilities to access to density parameter. This achievement is the fruit of the cooperation between several institutions and the fruit of several years of developments and trials. NOSS sensor is designed to be deployed in coastal environment and open-ocean waters up to 2000m, especially on profiling floats of the Argo network.

La Bouée MOLIT : un nouveau concept de bouée instrumentée ArchiMer
Quemener, Loic; Repecaud, Michel; Jegou, Paul; Aoustin, Yannick; Retho, Michael; Barbot, Stephane; Gautier, Laurent; Podeur, Christian; Pichavant, Pascal.

MarsiteCruise was undertaken in October/November 2014 in the Sea of Marmara to gain detailed insight into the fate of fluids migrating within the sedimentary column and partially released into the water column. The overall objective of the project was to achieve a more global understanding of cold-seep dynamics in the context of a major active strike-slip fault. Five remotely operated vehicle (ROV) dives were performed at selected areas along the North Anatolian Fault and inherited faults. To efficiently detect, select and sample the gas seeps, we applied an original procedure. It combines sequentially (1) the acquisition of ship-borne multibeam acoustic data from the water column prior to each dive to detect gas emission sites and to design the tracks of...
